ALAN   LAMB   trained   at   London’s   Metropolitan   University.   From   1997   to   2007   he   taught   on the   City   &   Guilds   of   London   Art   School   Conservation   BA   Course   and   for   10   years   held   the post   of   Head   of   Historic   Carving    at   City   &   Guilds,   responsible   for   the   UK’s   leading   graduate and   post   graduate   courses   in   wood   carving    and   stone   carving.   From   2007   he   was   master carver   on   the   “Vertues   Angels”   project   at   St   George’s    Chapel   Windsor,   overseeing   the design   and   production   of   forty   new   sculptures   for   the   chapel.    In   2012   Alan   designed   and produced   the   sculptural   work   for   the   Royal   Barge   for   the   Queen’s   Diamond    Jubilee   River Pageant.   He   is   an   honorary   member   of   The   Worshipful   Company   of   Joiners   and   Ceilers   of the City of London. SWAN   FARM   STUDIOS   LTD   was   formed   in   1992   in   the   wake   of   the   National   Trust’s   restoration   of   Uppark   House.   Alan   assembled   a   small team    of   experienced   carvers,   gilders   and   conservators,   and   founded   Swan   Farm    Studios.   Very   high   level   traditional   craft   skills   and strong   links   with   the   conservation   departments   of    major   collections   and   teaching   institutions   ensured   an   approach   that   combined   the best    of    traditional     craft    techniques    with    an    awareness    of    ongoing    academic,    scientific    and    ethical    developments    within     the conservation world. This ethos continues to define our work.  
We carry out consultancy, research, analysis, conservation and repair of fine joinery, carving, sculpture, and decorative art, including gilded, varnished and polychromed surfaces. We work in our studios in Shropshire and Oxfordshire  and on site at locations across the UK  We also design and create new sculpture in wood, stone or bronze for historically sensitive locations

Trinity College Oxford Restoration and conservation of Grinling Gibbons woodcarving and sculpture, at Trinity College Chapel The project won the Oxford Preservation Trust Building Conservation Award 2016 and was shortlisted for the Georgian Group Architectural Conservation Award Client: Trinity College Oxford

Jesus College Oxford 2017 Restoration and conservation of the Jacobean screen, panelling and wood finishing at Jesus College Dining Hall. Joint winner with Corpus Christi Chapel, of the Oxford Preservation Trust Building Conservation Award 2017 Client: Jesus College Oxford
Carving and joinery repairs in the chapel and Pern Library Paint analysis and test cleaning of the Chapel ceiling to establish the extent of a 1630’s painted and gilding scheme, covered with 19th century varnish Client: Peterhouse College Cambridge   
Lincoln College Oxford 2018 Restoration/conservation of  polychromed and gilded woodcarving and paneling on the Ceiling of Lincoln College Chapel Oxford. The project used 38,000 leaves of 23 ¾ ct gold Client; Lincoln College Oxford
Uphill Manor  2018 Restoration of Joinery, Staircases and panelling at Uphill Manor Somerset after extensive fire Damage. Shortlisted for the RICS building conservation awards 2019 Client: Austin Newport Group/Uphill Manor

Selected recent projects
2019 / 2020 projects include the conservation of  a 1530’s Brabant altar piece for Radley College, an “angel roof “at Cawston in Norfolk, a condition audit of Grinling Gibbons work at Hampton Court and refurbishment of the screen and stalls at Lincoln College Oxford.
